Artist thought: Often in life one has to literally or figuratively find one’s way. Thinking about this idea led me to create this painting focused on the notion of finding one’s way home. 

A FLOWER FROM XANADU

Artist thought: When I was a teenager around 16, I first read the poem “Kubla Kahn” by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. In my imagination then, and ever since, the images of gardens abloom within a stately courtyard have lived. I planted flowers in my own gardens profusely. It was easy for me to see those flowers from Xanadu as I worked to bring one of them alive in this painting.

Artist thought: I love nature and often include preserved flower petals, leaves, and other bits of nature in my paintings. I think of this painting as a metaphor for creative inspiration.

Artist thought: I love to look up at the stars in the night sky. I imagine landforms crossed by a river of stars that had fallen to earth in the time before time.
